Doorstep Donations: Superhero Kid Fights Hunger With Unique Drive

Over the past several weeks, we have seen so many supporters answer the call the to fight hunger through our Summer Action Hero campaign. Their incredible generosity will help families who already struggling to make ends meet provide meals for their children or pay higher than normal utility bills this summer. 

One of these superheroes is third grader, Kegan. During a recent service project, Kegan decided he wanted to host a food drive to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry at his church. He learned that through this pantry, SVdP volunteers deliver food boxes to hungry families in his community.

"I think it's important to help people in need, because it's the right thing to do. The people might not be able to help themselves, so we need to help. It's also important because Jesus wants us to do it," says Kegan.

But what made Kegan's food drive special was how he asked for the donations. Instead of setting up a donation box in front of his house or at his church and asking others to bring in food, he brought to food drive TO THEM.

Kegan wrote a note explaining his mission and attached it to several grocery bags. His mother and sister then helped him drive around his neighborhood, dropping off a 'donation bag' on each neighbor's doorstep.

According to Kegan's mother Kirsten, the response was overwhelming.

"I warned my kids that we might only get a bag or two from the neighbors who knew us," she says, "But the response was amazing! Almost every house left donations. Some people gave more than one bag and we even had one neighbor that gave four paper grocery bags full of food."

Another sweet surprise they discovered after going around the neighborhood picking up the food were handwritten notes on the grocery bags. Many neighbors wrote encouraging messages, such as "We're proud of you!" and "Great job Kegan!"

"It was an amazing experience. In our world today, so many people are so focused on only themselves and what can profit them, that mercy and compassion toward others is getting lost. I want my kids to always be aware that they are Jesus' hands and feet," says Kirsten.

We are truly blessed to have such great supporters, like Kegan and his family, who use their 'superpower' of compassion to help others.
